Thank you for loving my picture but nope, you can't have it for free.
I am a professional photographer. This is how I make my money. I take pictures of families, newborns, weddings, seniors and so many other types of sessions but I also love to take lots of pictures when I am on vacations at amazing places such as Hawaii or Estes Park, Co.
I get so excited when someone messages me and says they LOVE one of my images that they saw on Facebook that I posted, but I do not love when they say "can I print that or can you send me that...for free" :-(
Recently an old friend of mine, Stacey, messaged me and wanted to know if she could have a copy of one of my Hawaii sunset images and how it would go perfect on her livingroom wall. After her being about the 5th person to message me in recent weeks to just send them a picture that I have taken, I told her since we have known eachother a long time and she gets me, she was now going to be the subject of my next blog post. I may just send her a beautiful print of that image for letting me pick on her and then I explained to her what I am going to say here...
No, No I cannot just send you my picture and here are the two main reasons why:
1. I make my living off of my pictures whether it's your family or a sunset in Oahu. This is how I pay my bills. I, like many people I am sure, do not like to work for free. I am sure that people don't realize it when they are asking for my images but I have finally gotten to a point that I have to say no, you can't just have it, but I would be happy to sell it to you in a beautiful print, canvas or digital form for a reasonable price.
2. You printing my image somewhere other than with me, makes someone else money. Why should Walgreens (Yuck, please don't print anything of significance there.) or any other place make a PROFIT off of my image? I put in the time, the expense of the equipment and the training to be able to create that image. It is mine and I don't want other companies benefitting from my hard work. I have access to the most amazing print labs all over the country. If you want a beautiful canvas or metal, I can get it for you and the money stays with my small business.
I get it, not everyone understands how it works. You see a beautiful image and it's so darn easy to just take it. We live in an era of instant gratification. Most people don't think twice about saving a image they see on the internet to their computer and using it as a screensaver Well, it's against the law to just take it. There are copyright laws. Now granted the copyright law police are not going to come into your living room and arrest you for stealing an image off of Facebook but it's just the wrong thing to do.
If you want to support me and my business please don't ask me for my images for free. Support me by purchasing them from me and then displaying them. It's a win win for both of us. You get an amazing art piece and I get to keep doing what I love!
